Manchester City returned to the top of the Premier League after a thorough demolishing of Southampton at the Etihad on Sunday.

City were rampant from the off and took the lead after just six minutes when Wesley Hoedt’s attempted clearance of a Leroy Sane cross ended up in the back of his own net.

That goal set the tone for the Saints, who were totally outclassed throughout.

Sergio Aguero netted his 150th Premier League goal to make it 2-0 to City on 12 minutes, scoring from a Raheem Sterling centre.

The Citizens found themselves 3-0 up within 18 minutes when David Silva fired home after a Sane flick.

Saints did get one back on the half-hour mark, with Danny Ings converting from the penalty spot after the striker was felled in the box by Ederson.

However, Sterling would make it 4-1 for the hosts just before the break.

Sterling bagged his second of the game on 67 minutes to cap a fine individual display from the England attacker.

Late on, Sane got amongst the goals to make it 6-1 for the Citizens after a superb, clinical display.

The win sees Pep Guardiola and co. move two points clear of Chelsea and Liverpool at the top of the table, with all three sides still unbeaten.

As for Mark Hughes and Southampton, they find themselves in 16th spot, two points clear of the drop-zone and worryingly without a top-flight win in seven games.
